What is the best SEO tactics for the subpages of the site?

I doing SEO for a large site (20+ pages). What are the best practices in regards to the sub-pages of the site? Should I put keywords for sub-pages, and if yes how similar can they be to my home page keywords? What about description and page title, how long should those be and how similar to the home page? Is there anything else that can be done for SEO optimization?

Not sure 20+ pages is large but ill weigh in....

20 pages about random topics won't really make your front page keywords rank any better but 20 pages about your main page's topic will. I wouldn't make 20 pages all with keywords like "buy vacuums" but rather long-tails\variations which is where good keyword research pays off.

All pages should have unique meta info (descriptions, titles, keywords,...), each page is looked at individually. Your meta info should be directly related to whats on that page, not whats on your main front page.

Judge the length of your Title tag and whatnot by looking at the SERPs. If you want precise numbers, SEOMoz recommends 70 chars as best practice and to keep your ranking keyword close to the beginning. You can go well over 70 and I don't believe its penalized but they just wrote an article on this if you want to read it...

On-Page SEO isn't too difficult to grasp and there is tons of help out there for beginners. It may seem simple, and it is, slapping some meta tags in and calling it a day... but On-Page SEO can get pretty in-depth with large sites trying to research and choose the most profitable keywords, optimizing each page for those keywords, and developing the best internal linking structure especially for dynamic sites.

As far as your off site seo start dumping links in to all your deep urls. I know there's a lot of people who only focus on building links to the top level domain.

I have the best luck with optimizing each page for two keywords that are "similar". For the sub-pages I name the page the keyword I am focusing on. When you make new pages my advice is to pick "similar but different" keywords.

E.G. Instead of "pet training" try "teach your dog" as one of the subpage kw'ds. I've found that if your KW'ds are TOO similar, google will simply ignore the subpage with the similar KW.

Here's some more basic on-page tips:

At least one KW in the domain.
Subpages should contain the name of the KW.
Use the KW in the title.
Use the KW in the H1 tag.
Use the KW in BOLD at least twice throughout the page.
Use the KW in a HYPERLINK a minimum of 3x throughout the page. I like to place a hyperlink right to the page and FROM the page I am targetting. (E.G. I put <a href="http://www.domain.com/dog-training/">dog training</a> DIRECTLY on the the page: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Shoot for a KW Density of 2.5-3%
Shoot for a minimum of 500 words on the page, with contextual content.

I don't even use META's anymore. Google ignores them as far as I can tell.

I hope this helps to give you an idea of what your on-page should look like.

    Targeting Keywords On Subpages

Yes you should target different keywords on subpages related to the content of that page. The title of the subpages can be of 80 characters where as your description can go upto 250 characters which should contain the keyword atleast thrice. The title should also contain the keyword twice.

It is very important to specify the relevant keywords of the page - to which you refer. Search engines take this very seriously now.
As an example - you can see how I apply this method on my website - [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
