Yeah, it's a little unclear and your point of cost is why I included that last quote
... if it's the suffix they are talking about $180k is just the starting price.

They also say up to 1,000 may be added per year.
If it was just for a domain.extension, it seems rediculous... I mean, would "shop.lasvegas/hookers" be enough justification to pay/charge $180k upfront and $25k a year over the alternative "shop.lasvegas.com/hookers"?

It remains to be seen at what lengths the mega corps would do for their own suffixes...
To me, this is just another move to milk more money out of big brands and mega corps by selling this idea of "imagine having your own suffix?"

Like, wtf, its not like they will own lasvegas...
Greed for money is the motive for ICANN and Egoism is the motive for the big companies willing to shell the extra bucks.

What everyone of the big boys is missing here is that as time goes by, less and less people remember domain names, they just use a search engine and that gives them what they wont for, no matter if those hookers are from shop.for.hookers.on.lasvegas.com or from lasvegas.com/shopforhookers, they will be the same hookers. And google found them! No one remembers most of the domains anymore, and with autocomplete features and search engine power etc those domains will just be another failure for me...

Would be interesting to note though which domains will google favor

i can imagine that there will be a lot of problems for people with these new TLD's. i remember when .info came up, before that TLD's were limited to 3 chars so many scripts (i.e. email address checks for registration) didn't accept .info domains as they simply thought its a invalid TLD. now occasionally i still see scripts that don't like TLD's with more than 3 chars, but if they get bigger than 4 or 5 they will have a lot of problems the next years until everything is updated to take the new top level domains into account.

I am guessing there will be a site/central repository/database where people can see what kind of TLDs exist and do checks on their scripts based on the TLDs found on those databses. If TLD that user inputs fails the checks against the list, script will fail. I dont think though that there will be more than a couple of hundred TLDs in all to check against.
